First overnight helper!

Last week we had our first overnight visitor/helper.  Aunt Cathy spent a night with us and helped with the boys.  She also did some laundry and cleaning for us.  We were able to get out for a walk while she was here.  We walked to the local Wildflower restaurant for lunch.  It was a beautiful day outside and the boys loved it.  In preparation for the walk we dressed the boys and I decided that it was chilly enough for hats.  Danny was fine with wearing his.

Dean, on the other hand, was a little upset that I made him wear the hat.  Once we started walking though, he calmed down and enjoyed the ride.  Here's Aunt Cathy soothing Dean.

THANK YOU, Aunt Cathy!  Come back and help see us soon!  We'll be right where you left us.

"Luke alike"

We know that Dean looks like the Hambys and Daniel looks like the Smiths.  However, this picture of Danny really shows his similarity to Uncle Luke's baby picture.  It'll be interestin to see who Danny looks like when he gets older.  I'm pretty sure Dean will still look like a Hamby boy when he gets older.

1 month old!

I’m a week late in posting this, but Danny & Dean are a month old! We can hardly believe it. How is it that we feel like it’s been forever since we’ve slept the whole night through, yet it seems like the boys can only be a couple weeks old?? Time is flying by right before us and we’re trying to hold on to the moments as they come.

 Dean
Daniel

We haven’t given an update on Dean for a bit because there wasn’t anything to share. Last week I took him to the hospital for his chest x-ray. The Pediatric Cardiologist and the surgeon wanted an x-ray done at 4 weeks old so they could see if there was a change in the mass on his lung. I got a call the next day saying there was no change (didn’t get smaller or larger). The next appointment will be in a week with the cardiologist. He will do another echocardiogram to watch the blood flow to the mass and see if his heart chambers are enlarging.

While we were up feeding the boys in the middle of the night sometime last week, we were discussing our boys’ traits. Daniel is the one who kicked and punched my internal organs during pregnancy and I just knew he was going to be the child that would test the boundaries! Dean was calm and hardly stirred in the womb (unless antagonized by Danny!) and now he’s the one who is testing the limits.

We call Danny “Mr. Patient” because no matter how hungry he is, he will wait and wait until he’s feed. He usually won’t scream, but instead will often put himself to sleep while waiting. Danny makes some of the funniest faces and keeps us laughing at them all the time. The thing that upsets him most is having his diaper changed at night when it’s cold and we’ve unwrapped him from his warm blanket! Even then, his scream isn’t piercing.

Dean doesn’t have a nickname yet. He does seem to carry the Hamby boy trait of loving his food. Once he’s hungry, there’s no transition between calm baby and starving baby. He goes from being perfectly fine to screaming with hunger pangs. The last couple of weeks Dean hasn’t been going to bed without a struggle. We let him scream for a while in bed before putting him in the living room to scream himself to sleep. For some reason Dean isn’t giving in to sleep. I go through the routine of making sure there is nothing wrong with him…fever? Hunger? Dirty diaper? Gas? Need another blanket? Every time (so far) it ends up being one thing; Dean wants you to hold him while you’re standing up. He’s not happy if you sit down or lay down, you must stand up. Well as soon as I stood up and held him he closed his eyes and went to sleep. I’d stay that way for 10 minutes and then put him back in bed. He’d wake up and start screaming all over again. So, for the sanity of the household, I put him in his little saucer in the living room and I go back in the bedroom and shut the door. This way, Dad gets the sleep he needs for work, Daniel doesn’t get woken up to a screaming brother in his ear and I will possibly get some sleep. The first few nights Dean screamed for about an hour. Yes, I let him cry that long. Joanna tells me I’m a mean mom! I went and checked on him several times to make sure nothing else was wrong, but I didn’t pick him up. The crying has progressively become less and less. In fact, last night he only cried one time!! I’m thinking he’s finally learning. Just so we don’t upset anyone by making it sound like Dean is a bad child, here are some of the compliments we pay Dean… “You have an amazing set of lungs!” That shade of redish-purplish you’re turning as you scream is beautiful!” “What a strong appetite you have!” “You’re resolve to stick to your guns is commendable!” See? There’s always a compliment we can pay our little guy, no matter the situation.

Since we don’t have another regular pediatrician appointment until they’re 2 months old, we thought we’d weigh them ourselves and see if we’re doing a good job of fattening them up. Here are their current weights according to our scale:

Dean = 10lbs

Danny = 9.5lbs

Can you believe it?? They’re getting so big! Let me tell you, that 1/2 lb difference between the two is noticeable when you pick them up. They will never catch up to their cousin Gregory’s weight, but we’re trying to at least fatten them up a bit before Gregory arrives in December so our boys don’t look like preemies next to him!

I haven’t taken a ton of pictures the past couple of weeks so there aren’t many to add, the main reason being that we really haven’t gone out much. I’ll try to take more in the coming weeks.  Here are two funny ones that I think already show these two are brothers...

Dean screaming in Daniel's ear.  Daniel's face is priceless!
Just when Dean was taking a drink, Daniel took revenge and screamed in Dean's ear.  And so it begins!

More pictures and first "bath!"

Here are a few pictures from the first week of October.  Though you may not notice it, the boys are already changing.  They're getting bigger each day!

Dad holding Dean like a football.  Dean hangs on to dad's arm with his legs.  So cute!
Aunt Kate with Dean and Mom with Daniel the day Aunt Kate had to go back to Minnesota. :( Sad day!
Aunt Elizabeth with Dean at his 1am feeding on their stop through town.
Uncle Luke with Daniel at his 1am feeding.
Mom trying to take a nap with Daniel (L) and Dean (R).
Mom holding Daniel (L) and Dean (R) in the diaper bag Rosemary made for us.  That's about as creative as we get with photos!

I gave the boys their first "bath" on Tuesday.  Their umbilical cords fell off over the weekend except for a tiny little bit that's still lodged inside, so we're not able to give them an actual bath yet.  This was more like a washcloth bath.  Here are a couple pictures plus a couple video clips of the traumatic event.  Enjoy!

 Cue the scary music...
Daniel in his "before" picture.  Poor guy has no idea what's in store for him.
Daniel was cold and unhappy with momma in this picture.  He really is bigger than this picture shows.  It looks like the bath is pretty big compared to him but when his legs are straight he almost fills the length of the tub.
He was much happier once he was wrapped snug in his towel...even though this picture doesn't show it!  Aunt Jennifer (dad's sister) made the boys some hooded towels but they're a bit large for them at this stage.  So, I just laid the boys on them once they were wrapped in their little towels.
Dean looking so peaceful before his bath.

I didn't get a picture of Dean in the tub because he was so upset about being naked and cold.  So, here is the after shot.  He had worked himself up so much that he was hungry...again!  He's trying to chew on his towel in this picture.

And here is a video clip of Dean in the tub write after I finished bathing him.  I took a small clip of Daniel as well, but I forgot to cover him with a washcloth so I won't post that one on here.

Here is a clip of Daniel after the bath...

After their bath and feeding we dressed them up and took some pictures.  Obviously we aren't professional photographers, but I think they turned out cute anyways.

Daniel (L) and Dean (R) lying on the quilt Grandma Linda made along with dad's teddy bear from when he was little.
Daniel relaxin' against dad's teddy bear "Beeker" in the adorable outfit Rozella and Norville (from church) gave us for at the baby shower.
Dean snuggled up against Beeker for a little snooze during the photo op.  That little outfit is just adorable, especially the hat!

If you'll notice, the hat actually fits Dean nicely, but it's a bit large on Daniel.  Just one of the many differences between the boys.  Dean has the large, round Hamby head and Daniel has the longer, narrow Smith head.

Okay, I think I'm done with updates for the week!  You're now up-to-date with the pictures and stories we have thus far.  Anytime you want to stop by the house, let us know.  Come back and visit the blog soon!

Love,
The Smiths

First week home

The first week home was filled with more visitors, meals prepared for us, Dr. appointments and sleep in increments of 2-2.5 hours.  We thought it'd be funny to keep count of how many diapers and bottles we've gone through, but that idea quickly went out the window because neither of us had the extra brain power to remember to track them!  Just know that we've gone through A LOT!  It's roughly around 20-24 diapers and bottles every 24 hours.  We look forward to the boys sleeping in longer increments because that will mean fewer diapers and bottles!

Here are some pictures of the first week home...

Thanks to everyone who brought meals and held the boys while we napped or just sat and visited.  Even though we were incredibly tired, we enjoyed the company!

I'm sure after this post I won't get many more requests for pictures for awhile, but more will follow!

Hospital Visitors

During our 4-day stay in the hospital we were blessed to have so many visitors drop by and meet Daniel and Dean.  We didn't get pictures of everyone but we wanted to post a few of the ones we did take.  More pictures are soon to come in future posts.

There were more family members who visited as well...Uncle Joey, Aunt Laura, and cousins Hannah, Rebecca and Benjamin; Aunt Grace and cousins Finley and Oliver; Uncle Todd and cousins Brittney and Jeff; Uncle Andrew, Aunt Angela and cousins Tyler, Harrison and Allison; Cousin Laurena.

Then there were friends...Kendra with twins Easton and Layla; Tam; Chad and Andrea with Zander; Pastor Phil and Pam; Doug and Teresa with Vincent; Jackie.

Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by to check on us (multiple times even!).  It made the time pass quickly and it made us feel so loved!  We look forward to the boys getting to know each of you as they grow.  Your prayers and support (especially through the scary bits) were felt and appreciated.  You all have such a special place in our hearts.

Love,
Scott and Marisue

Change of plans...Early arrival

We would like to introduce you to Daniel Wayne and Dean Hamilton!!

They decided to disregard their mom's strict timeline and make an early exit from the womb.  Instead of waiting until 9/23 and allowing us to finish the nursery and pack our hospital bag, they were born on Sunday, September 19th.  I guess they wanted to share Papa and Grandma's anniversary date!  The Hamby family calendar was void of birthdays in the month of September.  The only event was my mom and dad's anniversary.  We had 29 other days to choose from and yet it was the 19th.  I guess Papa and Grandma will always remember DandD's birthday!

Sunday morning I was sitting, eating breakfast, when I started to pass out.  I've never passed out before but I figured if I didn't get Scott's attention, I would be lying on the floor when he found me later on.  I made it into our bedroom where Scott was sleeping and just fell into the bed.  Scott sat up real fast and I told him I just felt like I was going to pass out and then my head started throbbing.  He wanted to call an ambulance but I said we should just drive since we live so close to the hospital and could get there before the ambulance would make it to our house.  Plus, as long as I could walk, I didn't want to have to pay an ambulance bill!  We made it to the hospital where they quickly hooked me up to monitor my contractions and make sure the babies weren't under any stress.  What the monitors showed was that I was in labor and my contractions were constant with no pause in between, yet I couldn't feel them.  They drew some blood and the results showed I was severely anemic...which I hadn't been during my pregnancy.  The nurse kept asking me if I could feel the contractions.  I assured her the only thing I felt was my horrible headache.  The decision was made to call my Dr.  She arrived quickly and reviewed everything that had been done so far.  She was concerned that I couldn't feel the contractions, that I was severely anemic so quickly and my head hurt so bad.

She decided they would go ahead and deliver me that day.  She was going to gather "The Team" and then get started.  I assumed "gathering The Team" would take 3-4 hours...don't ask me what I based that on.  I called to tell my parents that boys would be born within the next few hours.  While still on the phone with them, I was told that they were prepping me for surgery!  It took them less than 45 minutes to gather The Team and wheel me into the OR.  We barely had time to have my big brother bring a camera to the hospital for us.  In fact, my doctor held up the c-section 15 minutes so we could get the camera and have pictures to show everyone!  We LOVE my doctor!

I was loaded up with some pretty wonderful drugs and the c-section began.  They opened me up and removed Daniel so fast that Scott hadn't even turned the camera on yet!  Once they cleaned Daniel up and helped him start breathing, Scott started taking pictures and video clips.  Dean was born 2 minutes later (it took a little extra time removing him from the home he made in my ribcage!).  Meantime, I started to feel like passing out again.  The room started spinning and I could hear my doctor calling out for blood.  That's really all I can remember of the actual c-section.  I woke up in the recovery room.  Turns out Daniel's placenta abrupted (tore away from my uterus) and I was bleeding into his placenta.  Nobody knew this had happened because I wasn't bleeding out and I wasn't screaming in pain.  Once they opened me up and removed Daniel they could see what had happened.  They had to get both boys out before starting any work on me.  After both boys were stable, Scott followed them up to the NICU (at the prompting of my doctor...and apparently me, but I don't remember that) and they began working on me.  I ended up getting two blood transfusions and a host of drugs pumped into my system.  By the time I got to my room that night, I was incredibly swollen.  A couple days later my doctor explained to us what had happened.  She said it was a good thing we came to the hospital when we did because Daniel would have suffered some damage or even died had we waited too long.  She didn't understand why I didn't feel that pain, and I didn't understand either.  The last comment she made to me at my previous appointment in her office was that I needed to go to the ER if I had a bad headache.  I'm not so sure I would've gone to the ER had she not told me that.  Scott would've made me go anyway, but if it were up to me, I probably would've said I just need to stay in bed and rest for a couple hours.  Thank God it didn't happen that way!

After all the testing they performed on Dean (due to the mass on his lung) and Daniel, the decision was made to keep Daniel in the NICU because his oxygen levels had been dropping due to ingesting my blood mixed with his amniotic fluid.  They wanted to monitor his breathing and make sure he was stable before releasing him.  Dean was released from the NICU later that night.  We expected Dean to be in the NICU for a couple days and Daniel to be in there for just the day but it turned out to be the opposite!  Daniel was released from the NICU later the following afternoon.  We were all discharged on Thursday and were excited to get our boys home!

Can you tell we were ready to get home?

We had help from Aunt Kate getting all our stuff home and getting the boys settled that night.  Thank you, Kate!!  The next post will have more pictures and less writing, I promise!  Get ready to see lots of photos of two of the cutest baby boys!

Love,
A proud, new momma

37 weeks

It's a little late to write this, but I needed to get it written nonetheless.  Here I am at 37 weeks along with pictures of my swollen legs and feet...or as my oldest brother likes to call them, snausages (pronounced like "sausages" but include the "n").  I was extremely uncomfortable that week but determined to make it to my scheduled c-section date of 9/23.  I had a list of "to do" items at work and home and was not going to deliver these boys before that list was completed.

The boys were getting bigger and I was sleeping less.  It seemed like no matter how long I kept my legs elevated, my swelling wouldn't go down.  What can you do when you're going to be uncomfortable no matter what you do?  You go out to eat!  Joey and Laura were going out of town with the kids on Sunday, 9/19 and wouldn't return until 9/24 (the day after the scheduled c-section) so they wanted to go out to eat with us one last time before the boys arrived.  We went to The Cheesecake Factory and enjoyed a delicious meal, followed by a nice browse at Barnes and Noble.  Then we went to their house to visit for a bit.  Here is a "self photo" I took on the way to dinner that evening, followed by the picture Joey took of Laura and me at their house afterwards (the last prego picture of me).  That belly is definitely lopsided!  From this view, Daniel is on the left and Dean is on the right.

That about wraps up the 37th week.  Next will be the 38th week and the delivery of our boys!!
